Coinbase is a secure platform that makes it easy to buy, sell and store cryptocurrency.

We started off with our research on the crypto market, wallets and its technologies, downloaded competitors apps and read through user reviews and various contents online.

From the User research, I discovered most users don't want to be overwhelmed with options and buttons. With so many crypto wallets out there, most of them lacked simplicity and good design and had too many interaction because they can make a simple transaction. I knew the only way we could stand out and build a great wallet app was to come up with simple and great design, lowering the learning curve for beginners with limited interactions to finish the process.

  • Bad Design

  • Over-complicated for beginners

  • Poor Architecture

  • Designs were not made with the intention to build trust

  • Needed blockchain knowledge

  • Lack of standard

It was time to collect information about clients requirements, industries, etc.

I ran a series of short stakeholder interviews with the staff at the client's company in order to learn more about the company's culture and expectations on the product.

I arranged meetings with Product managers and Solutions architects to layout the architecture for the application.

  • Who is the target?

  • How do we differentiate from them?

  • What do we know about them?

  • What might they be looking for?

  • What are we offering?

  • How will they find us?

  • What do we want them to do on the website?

  • Who are the competitors?

  • What are our biggest strengths and weakness?

Note: During the research, I felt I needed to talk to more of our clients:

How did they find us?

What made them choose us instead of a competitor?

What do they most value in a blockchain application?

What are their biggest concerns?

Etc.

I invited developers and blockchain enthusiasts to participate in interviews to get a better understanding of what was lacking in this blockchain wallet industry which helped me create personas.

Tim is new to the blockchain wolrd and had a very bad experience with the last last few apps and is looking for a simple wallet. He searching online for "simple blockchain wallets" and finds Coinbase after going through the results. He sees that Coinbase could do everything the other wallet apps were doing but looks beautiful and simple. He tries the app and loves it for its simplicity and easy to use. He i now happy because he just found an app which din't needed prior technical knowledge of blockchain nor it was complicated to use.

I used Rubik Typeface. I like its simplicity and modern look. I think it’s a gorgeous font family and a nice fit for the colors we choose for branding.

USER FLOW CHART

After gathering a lot of information and inspiration from the cryptocurrency application and sketching out a lot a lot of flow versions. I made a flow chart which would help us understand the user flow.

My primary focus was on onboarding as proper onboarding and a visual start is a way to get the users going.

It truly couldn't get simpler than this

Working on this application really challenged me to design in a way that generated big impact from small changes.   I enjoyed exploring user research options for this project considering the simplicity and usability for all kinds of users.
